We got a letter from a botanist explaining how scarce the hoodia has become because of its sale and popularity as a weight loss supplement. The suppliers we recommend selling authentic hoodia have agreements with commercial farmers in South Africa to grow hoodia in large quantities so that the wild plants are not completely decimated.
Here is his original letter to us on March 12, 2007.
I am a botanist at the South African National Biodiversity Institute at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
I have done much field work in South Africa and Namibia and have personally seen many Hoodia plants in the wild. It is very concerning to me how much of an international demand there is for this plant. They grow extremely slowly, even in cultivation (I grow a number of plants here at the botanical gardens) and are often very few and far between in the wild (you very seldom see a large stand of them).
I have also recently visited a farm where they have been illegally harvested to the point where the plants are almost completely destroyed. At the current rate with the current demand, they will be driven to extinction within a very short time. There simply is not enough production to supply the demand and harvesting from the wild is a completely non-viable option.
I have attached photo's of illegally collected plants which brings a sobering perspective to the whole african hoodia affair.
